A Word for 2013

A brand new year usually means lots of “New Year’s Resolutions” which we all mean to keep and those fizzle out – for me anyway - long before the month of January is over.

This year I am building my resolve but not making resolutions.  Instead I’m choosing a word.  A simple two letter word:  DO.   I’m tired of being a procrastinating perfectionist paralyzed and overwhelmed who gets nothing done.

A few weeks ago a blogging friend from the Crew shared her heart about being a Do-er.  I tend to procrastinate until I have time to “do it right”.  I’m a perfectionist.  I have, in many ways and in many areas, relaxed and no longer require things to be a certain perfect way.

I’ve chosen do as my focus word for the year because at the end of 2013 I want to be able to list all the things I accomplished instead of bemoaning all the projects I never started because I was stuck in planning mode.

Don’t get me wrong, planning is good.  Sometimes I need to plan or my efforts are just wasted energy, but sometimes planning is a code word for procrastination.  “Oh I’m planning to start that crafting project when my life is perfectly ordered and I follow a nice lovely schedule that I am planning to create just as soon as I have time to sit down and do it perfectly.”

I think there is a correlation between clutter, unfinished projects, and depression.  The more stuff I have lying around coupled with all the stuff I want to do but never seem to have time to do just leads to paralyzing depression for me.

So enter DO.  Do-ing something is better than sitting around dreaming of what I could do if I had time.  DO-ing something, anything, is better than sitting around bemoaning that I am overwhelmed with piles of this, that, and the other thing that I have put off dealing with.   I’ve already started DO-ing things (hmm maybe I should blog about the Great Bedroom Swap of 2012 which has lead to the Enormous DeClutter Job of early 2013?)

I hope to blog frequently about the things I am DO-ing in 2013.  Have you chosen a focus word for 2013?  I’d love to know what word you’ve chosen.

  1. Here's to a year of DO-ing for both of us! I, too, have let perfectionism keep me from getting things done (even starting?). We'll make this a year of less planning and more doing. :)

  2. I love this line..."I'm tired of being a procrastinating perfectionist paralyzed and overwhelmed who gets nothing done." I finally found a sentence to describe myself. This is also how I found my word for the year- Proacive. Thanks for sharing.

  3. What a great word and a great way to look at things - I hear you on the procrastinating to paralysis thing.
